Denji grew up in extreme poverty after his father's death left him with a crushing debt to the Yakuza. He survived by selling organs and working as a devil hunter alongside Pochita, a small chainsaw Devil he had befriended and cared for.
After being murdered by a Zombie Devil controlled by the Yakuza, Denji made a final request to Pochita: he wanted to live a normal life — toast for breakfast, a girlfriend, a future. Pochita agreed, fusing with Denji's heart and reviving him as a Hybrid.
Abilities as the Chainsaw Hybrid
Denji can activate his transformation by pulling a cord on his chest (which requires blood). In his transformed state, chainsaw blades erupt from his head, arms, and legs. He is extraordinarily durable and regenerates rapidly as long as he has access to blood.
His ultimate ability — unique among Hybrids — is the power to erase Devils from existence and from memory. Any Devil devoured by Chainsaw Man is permanently erased; not just killed, but removed from human consciousness. This is why the Gun Devil, originally the most feared entity on Earth, became comparatively less terrifying after being partially eaten by Chainsaw Man in the past.
Personality and Motivations
Denji is refreshingly uncomplicated for a shonen protagonist. His goals are immediate and physical — he wants to eat good food, have a girlfriend, and live a normal life. He does not want to save the world; he just wants the ordinary things he never had.
This simplicity makes him both endearing and formidable. Because he does not overthink, he is nearly impossible to manipulate through complex schemes — he simply does what feels right to him in the moment, which repeatedly catches more calculating opponents off-guard.
Key Relationships
Pochita: His Devil partner and heart. Their relationship is the emotional anchor of the entire series — Pochita wanted to see the outside world, Denji gave him that chance, and Pochita saved Denji's life in return.
Aki Hayakawa: Initially hostile, Aki becomes a genuine older-brother figure to Denji. His arc is one of the most heartbreaking in the series precisely because of how much Denji cares for him.
Power: The Blood Fiend is Denji's chaotic, selfish, and ultimately deeply loyal companion. Her growth from a purely self-interested entity to someone who sacrifices herself for Denji is one of the series' finest character arcs.
Makima: The Control Devil who recruits and manipulates Denji. Their relationship is the series' central dark thread — Denji is aware she is using him yet cannot help being drawn to her, and the resolution of this dynamic is the pivot on which all of Part 1 turns.
