Devil Contracts Explained: How Fiends, Hybrids & Contracts Work
Chainsaw Man's power system revolves around contracts — binding agreements between humans and Devils that grant power at a price. Understanding contracts, fiends, and hybrids is essential for mastering any CSM game and appreciating the story's deeper themes.

Devils are supernatural entities born from human fears. Every fear that exists in the world has a corresponding Devil — the Chainsaw Devil, the Gun Devil, the Darkness Devil, the Blood Devil, and so on. The stronger the fear associated with a concept, the more powerful the Devil born from it.
Devils roam between the human world, Hell, and a cycle of reincarnation. When a Devil dies in the human world, it reincarnates in Hell. When it dies in Hell, it reincarnates back in the human world — with no memory of its previous life.
How Contracts Work
Humans can form contracts with Devils in exchange for power. The price of a contract is always something precious to the contracting human — it might be a lifespan, a body part, a sense, a cherished memory, or even something conceptual.
Aki Hayakawa's contracts illustrate the range perfectly: he paid his right eye to the Fox Devil for a devastating technique, gave years of his life to the Curse Devil, and ultimately made the most tragic contract of all with the Future Devil.
Contracts are binding and cannot be broken unilaterally. Both parties must agree on the terms before the deal is sealed, and Devils are bound to honour their side of the arrangement.
Fiends: Devils Possessing Corpses
When a Devil takes over a human corpse, the result is called a Fiend. Fiends retain the body's appearance but display deformities on their head reflecting the Devil inside. Power, for example, has horns from the Blood Devil within her.
Unlike contracted Devils who retain their full form, Fiends are weaker because they are confined to a human body. They do gain human-level intelligence and can pass among people undetected — at least from a distance.
Fiends do not grant powers through contracts. Instead, the Devil itself uses the body directly, channelling its abilities through the host's physical form.
Hybrids: The Rarest Category
Hybrids are the rarest classification. They occur when a living human merges with a Devil rather than a corpse. Denji is the most prominent example — his heart was replaced by Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, who then fused with his body after Denji died and wished to see the outside world.
Hybrids retain human consciousness and can transform into a Devil form at will (typically triggered by blood). They are significantly stronger than Fiends because the human spirit and the Devil power reinforce each other rather than competing.
Other hybrids include Katana Man, Bomb Girl (Reze), and Quanxi. Each hybrid's form reflects their Devil — Denji gains chainsaws, Reze gains explosive blast abilities, and Quanxi gains crossbow bolts.
Primal Fears and Special Devils
At the top of the Devil hierarchy sit the Primal Fear Devils — embodiments of instincts so deep they transcend culture and era. The Darkness Devil is the clearest example: fear of the dark is universal across all of human history, making the Darkness Devil one of the most powerful entities in existence.
These Devils are special because their associated fears cannot be diminished. No matter how advanced society becomes, people will always fear the dark, death, and chaos — ensuring the Devils born from those fears remain permanently at full strength.
